The following is a case study of Carryn Martin, an Occupational therapist based in Woodmead, Gauteng.
About Carryn Martin
Witnessing the significance that occupational therapy played in my younger sisters’ lives, who were born at 26 weeks gestation, sparked my interest and love for occupational therapy and early intervention. I decided that I wanted to support children to realise their full potential.
I completed my OT degree at Wits in 2007. After completing my community service at Natalspruit Hospital, I went straight into paediatric private practice. I have worked in various paediatric settings, including preschools, primary and remedial school environments, neonatal ICU.
I have a huge passion for sensory integration, which led me into completing my Sensory Integration training in 2010. I believe this is integral when dealing with and treating children and babies.
I had the opportunity to open a practice at Wilgeheuwel Hospital in 2013. It was an ideal place for me to start my practice because there were no paediatric OT’s and so I took the plunge.
My practice grew, and at the beginning of 2018 I opened another branch. It is now based in Woodmead, called The Early Bird Therapy Centre.
What is the current setup of your practice?
I have a room at Wilgeheuwel Hospital and a second practice location in Woodmead called The Early Bird Therapy Centre.
I have 2 full time OT’s, 1 part-time and 1 who is Ad hoc.
I currently get a lot of my referrals from paediatricians, psychologists and schools that I’ve worked with.
What attracted you to the IsoForge product?
I was tired of doing admin!
What are your current experiences with IsoForge?
I’ve been happy with IsoForge. I get peace of mind knowing I’ve got a support team behind me and knowing I’m doing things the right way. Compliance is important to me.
I never have delays in replies from the team and now the only admin I have to keep up with is my own note taking with regards to my patients and patient files.
Previously I would spend about 2 hours per day on admin, whereas now it’s approximately 15 minutes per day. So it saves me a lot of time.
What do you like most about IsoForge?
Not having to follow up with parents for payment.
Where do you feel IsoForge Falls Short for you at the moment?
I can’t say it’s falling short, but I’m ready for more involvement now on the marketing side and getting my website up and going to support my move to the Woodmead practice.
Why don’t you rather hire a secretary / PA to assist with your admin?
It would be too expensive to be honest. IsoForge is good value for money.
Did you look at any other business practice management solutions? Why didn’t you go with them?
Initially I was using QuickBooks and then a moved to a couple of other software programmes, but when you compare them to IsoForge, it’s obvious that it is a more holistic package. Plus, it’s quick to learn.
What are your professional passions and future plans for your practice?
I would like to grow the practice. I like managing and supervising my practice and other therapists so that’s where I see it going.
I have a two and a half year old daughter so I would like my afternoons to be freed up to be able to spend more time with her.
